HOW DOES COMSOL SOLVE FOR DEPOSIT THICKNESS?

I was going through several documentations(https://doc.comsol.com/5.4/doc/com.comsol.help.edecm/IntroductionToElectrodepositionModule.pdf) and examples (https://www.comsol.com/model/copper-deposition-in-a-trench-2112) , and I have a good understanding of how the local current densities are solved using the Butler-Volmer equations to solve for the potentials. My question is, while it does solve for the concentration of the ionic species, how does it solve for the total electrode thickness change? Just because it gives the concentration of the ions, does it mean that is how the shape of thee deposited surface looks like? Does saturation/salting out/packing fraction not have a role to play?
